What is Habitat? Habitat for Humanity - Blue Mountain
Partners is part of an international Christian non-profit
organization which helps people in need of decent housing to build
and own modest and affordable houses. Families or individuals
purchase their homes from Habitat. Habitat provides that family
with an interest free loan for up to 20 years which results in
affordable monthly payments. Since many materials and services are
donated, the cost of building a Habitat home is much lower than a
conventional home.
How does your family qualify to purchase a Habitat home? The
family or individual is selected based upon the following general
criteria:
- You must currently live in sub-standard or overcrowded housing.
Homeless families may be eligible. If you are living in Section 8
housing, you probably will not qualify, as Section 8 housing
by definition is considered adequate housing. Families who spend
greater than 40% of their income on modest housing or Section 8
housing may also be eligible.
- You must be a resident of the community in which the home is
being built. Preference is given to families or individuals who
have lived in the community for five years or more and demonstrate
their commitment to remain in the area.
- You must be willing to have a partnership with Habitat by
donating 500 hours to help us build your home or the home of
another Habitat Family or by supporting Habitat in other ways.
- You or your family should have a household income within the
limits on the Income Qualification Table
and you must be unable to secure conventional financing to purchase
a home. Included in income are all Medicaid/Medicare payments,
food stamps, and other paid governmental or privately paid
assistance you may receive. If you are in doubt, please apply and
we will determine your eligibility for you.
- You will need to complete this application and be interviewed by members
of the Habitat for Humanity - Blue Mountain Partners Family
Selection Committee. Applications can also be obtained by calling or
writing the Habitat Office.
- Other requirements will be explained if your family is
determined to be eligible based upon the first five selection
criteria.
